The evening formal on Saturday, Jan. 20 is a fundraising event for the upcoming production of Tennessee Williams' Camino Real and celebration of the arts in Jersey City.
The night will be hosted by Regie Cabico and includes jazz and DJ music and food from local restaurants.
A night of music and entertainment
The ball will be held at Victory Hall, 186 Grand St., at 8 p.m. and will be hosted by Regie Cabico from HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" and winner of MTV's "Free Your Mind" competition.
Cabico is known locally to some in Jersey City from participating at Art House Production's open mic nights. According to Christine Goodman, director of Art House Productions, Cabico is a phenomenal performer and spoken word artist.
"He's been featured at Art House Productions before," said Goodman. "It's nice to have him hosting such a special event."
The night kicks off with music by Jazz duo Dave Willcocks and Joe Bussey, who will play several sets.
But what ball would be complete without dancing?
As the night goes on, DJ Dancing Tony will spin the music for the late night dance portion.
Champagne, light fare, and silent auction
Delicious hot and cold appetizers will be provided by local business sponsors: LITM, Light Horse Tavern, and Bar Majestic.
And cocktails! Champagne, beer and cognac will be available and were donated by: Frenet Branca, Louis Royer Cognac, Verdi Spumanti, and Brooklyn Brewery.
In addition, there is a silent auction which includes many luxury items including: dinner for two at LITM or Bar Majestic, gym packages (Gold Coast Fitness membership plus BaGua Juice certificate), tickets to "Orchestra of St. Luke's" at Carnegie Hall, a romantic weekend getaway at the Marriot in Stamford, Experience Life Spa package, a makeup basket and session with a celebrity makeup artist, original art by local artists (Christine Goodman, Ev Stone, Greg Linington, Mark Gibson, and Frank Messina), and much more.
According to Goodman, it is a good opportunity for newcomers to come out and meet local residents and artists.
"I think there are never enough excuses to get dressed up," said Goodman. "We wanted to do an event that was formal. We also wanted to do something where artists and politicians would feel comfortable."
"It's black tie, but black tie creative," added Goodman.
Guests coming to the event should feel free to let loose with their creativity when it comes to dressing for the night.
Art House Productions
Art House Productions, which is run by director Goodman, has brought new life to the Jersey City art scene since its modest start as an open mic night in 2001.
Under Goodman's tutelage, Art House Productions has grown from open mic to community outreach to multi-media productions, like last year's Heist production.
Part of this year's ticket will go toward Camino Real, which is already in pre-production for the March 2 opening.
Camino Real features a cast of over 25 professional actors (locals and New York) plus a set design by Jersey City artist Nyugen Smith.
Jack Halpin, assistant director of Art House Productions, directs the play.
The play is one of Williams least produced productions and was panned by critics when it opened at the Broadway National Theater in 1953.
Although critics didn't understand it, Williams felt strongly about the play and called it "the continually dissolving and transforming images of a dream."
According to Goodman, the play features characters from literature that are literally stuck in this imagined city, who must look at their past and past mistakes in order to fix their future.
"Even though these characters are stuck," said Goodman, "it's also got a lot of hope. More so than his other plays."
And...
According to Goodman, they plan to host a "Snow Ball" every year in support of upcoming Art House Productions in Jersey City.
Goodman said that many tickets have sold already and they expect a crowd of over 200 people.
"I think it will be a wonderful night to dust off your ball gown or tux in support of the arts!" said Goodman. "It's going to be a fabulous night." Victory Hall is located at 186 Grand St. in Jersey City. The Snow Ball is this Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit: www.arthouseproductions.org. Sidebar SNOW BALL
