Dealer at the wheel, allegedly
Police arrested a man for drug possession with intent to distribute recently after observing him allegedly handling marijuana while driving in his car.
On Friday, May 29, at 3:24 p.m., police patrolling the area of Seventh and Willow streets saw two men in a white Hyundai and the driver apparently manipulating something on his lap, according to police Captain Anthony Falco.
Police became suspicious of the driver’s actions and attempted to pull the car over at Sixth and Willow streets, but the driver allegedly took off.
Police attempted to pull the car over again at Fifth Street and Park Avenue by Church Square Park. The driver obliged this time, police said, and upon approaching the vehicle, officers found alleged loose marijuana on the driver’s lap.
After ordering the driver out of the car, they found two bags of alleged marijuana, loose $20 bills, and a wad of cash in the car.
The driver, David Caamano, 20, Hoboken, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute because of the multiple bags, denomination of bills, and amount of cash. Police seized the $176 in cash they found in the car, Falco said.
Caamano was also charged with possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public park and within 1,000 feet of a public school, and two driving summonses.
Seven years bad luck
A group of teens knocked six side-view mirrors off of cars along Fifth Street last week, said Falco.
On Monday, June 1, at 1 a.m., police received a phone call from a witness who said a group of juveniles were moving along Fifth Street by Clinton Street kicking side-view mirrors off random cars. The man could not provide police with a description of the teens, police said.
Six cars were vandalized: two silver Honda Civics, a gray Nissan, a gray Audi, a red Toyota, and a white Mitsubishi.
Police notified the car owners, half of whom were from Hoboken, of the damage. No suspects were found in the area.
